Metallica - Death Magnetic (DECEiFER REMASTER) - MP3 (320 Kbps) It was a dull day for the Metallica timeline when they released Death Magnetic. Speculation into whether the digital releases prior to the album's retail CD release on September 12th, 2008, would be much worse in comparison were confirmed as being untrue. The fact is, the retail CD release of Death Magnetic may as-well be played on your kids' cheap stereo manufactured by Fisher Price. It is just that bad! But all was not ruined, as on the same day, it became apparent from those who had grabbed a copy of Death Magnetic for their consoles, specifically for Guitar Hero III, that the tracks were not clipping due to heavy limiting. In-fact, they sounded like pre-masters. I had to find out more, so I downloaded the tracks on BitTorrent from an uploader called paulisme (not D34DL1N3R's). This version came with plenty of headroom, which for mastering is just what was needed. It wasn't so long thereafter that I took on the task of mastering these tracks, at the exact same time Moderus was doing his own. We were both making samples available on a community forum, that we are mutual members of, a forum against the destruction of great music, music that has fallen victim to what is now known as, "The Loudness War." I have Moderus' masters, and I do enjoy listening to them. However, while we were both doing our mastering work, I had taken a different direction to what he and his ideals for doing this task were (even though they were not apparent to me at the time). I just wanted the songs to sound good, to live up to the Metallica image! Therefore, I mastered the tracks myself, in the hopes of gaining some low-end clarity, which I found to be lacking on both the retail CD and the Guitar Hero III stock tracks. Obviously, I wanted the songs to be amplified as much as possible, without the heavy clipping. Not everyone has a loud stereo, so that to me seemed like an important part of the process. The tracks needed to be livened up, and that is exactly what I did. Overall, you should expect a wholesome sound, much warmer than the retail CD, but also allowing the listener to experience the dynamics as should have been intended by the sound engineers working on the album for Metallica. I'm sure some of you would like to know what the key differences are between Moderus' masters and my own. As admitted my Moderus, his do clip in places, more so than mine, but the amplification is *roughly* the same, so if you're comparing our two masters, don't bother tweaking your volume knob a great deal. In listening to another master done by eetfunk, and examining his waveforms, in my opinion his is Limited more so than it has to be, but they still sound better than the mixes that are on the retail CD. My one has more emphasis on low-end clarity and heavier crunch, in good balance, not overkill. Moderus' masters seem to hit on the ideal of treble clarity and middle punch, also in good balance. Overall, it's my opinion that we both did evenly decent jobs, and it depends on what you're looking to hear from this album, at any given time. Do what I do, download and listen to both, depending on your mood. To give you a visual insight into my analysis, check these images out... eetfunk's Broken, Beaten & Scarred: http://img362.imageshack.us/my.php?image=dmremastereetfunkrz8.jpg Moderus' Broken, Beaten & Scarred: http://img232.imageshack.us/my.php?image=dmremastermoderussz6.jpg My (DECEiFER's) Broken, Beaten & Scarred: http://img259.imageshack.us/my.php?image=dmremasterdeceiferfe6.jpg Line: paulisme FLAC's -> FLAC Frontend transcode to Wav -> Mastering work in Adobe Audition 3.0 -> Adobe Audition 3.0 Transcode to 320 Kbps MP3 Track Listing: 1. Suicide & Redemption (Kirk Hammett) 10. My Apocalypse 11. Suicide & Redemption (James Hetfield) I've also made a 320 Kbps MP3 sample looping 30 seconds of "Broken, Beat & Scarred" three times. The first loop is from the retail CD, stock, but only brought down in amplification (with no other processing whatsoever). The second is the stock sound from the Guitar Hero III track. You should pay particular attention to the third and final 30 second loop, which contains my master of the Guitar Hero III track. All waveform amplifications throughout the whole MP3 have been tuned to give the most even volume coming out of your speakers throughout all three loops. Compare and enjoy! In my opinion, Moderus' master lacks the dynamics of the guitar hero version and sounds very similar to the retail version, only less distorted (like he described it). This is not what I am looking for. Does yours sound this way as well? I know you state that it allows you to experience the dynamics, but yet you also state that it is about the same volume as Moderus'. You also stated that it does not have heavy clipping. How can it be the same volume as Moderus' but not clip or destroy the dynamics like his does? Making it too loud causes clipping and destroys dynamics. Please explain. I am looking for a version like eetfunk's, only better, if possible.
As I said in my description, I have a sample.

I'm not the best at explaining things in plain English, which is why I'll never be any sort of teacher. Let the sample tell you the story. :)

I have just listened to eetfunk's Broken, Beaten & Scarred remaster. I'm far from impressed. It has been Limited and sounds a lot closer to the retail version than mine or Moderus'.
To prove this, check out these images below...

I think the answer is obvious. Download my remaster. ;)

Thanks, man. Hearing positive feedback never gets old. It means a lot to know that you're enjoying them. :)
I can see what you were trying to do, but I don't think you quite reached your goal. I think you should do another mix. This one shows promise, but it's lacking in a few places.
You read my mind. My goal, unlike yours, was to make the album sound how I wanted it to sound. But to take the time I'd need to really give it my 100% and somehow manage to impress the fuck out of myself, would mean failing this semester at college, sadly. I am far too swamped with assessments / projects.
In my description above, I hope you don't think that I am in any way bustin' in on your remasters in a negative way? Yours and mine are the only two sets that I repeatedly listen to.
Overall, there's no really excellent mix out there at the moment. Mine, yours, eetfunk's, and a few others, they all lack something. But, that said, everything that I've heard from other uploaders, and my own, still exceeds the official retail CD's versions by a country mile. That much I can say with 100% confidence.

Nah, I don't think ragging on mine. To go a more into detail about what I meant, your version, to me at least, lacks some clarity. Plus, I was finding it hard to hear some of the backing guitars located on the drum stem. I think mine and yours come closest in regards to a retail version(mine), and a personal mix(yours).
Just to be clear, I didn't download any individual track stems. At the time I didn't know they were available. I still haven't gone about obtaining any stems, I really should be doing that now in case they disappear forever. Therefore, I didn't do any mixing. I only mastered the whole tracks. My next attempt will probably involve mixing stems, I hope. I'd like to have more control of process involved in delivering the end product, for sure!
Still, it's nice to see people appreciating the work we have done. At least not everyone's a deluded fanboy and thinks that the retail CD is golden. Unfortunately, I've come across a few, and they have been quite aggressive towards my opinions.

That explains the lack of clarity on the tracks then. If you get around to doing a true mix using the stems, I have a feeling it will blow your current one out of the water. I had made a mix before my current one just using one of the flat rips, and compared to my current one, it's terrible.
GREEAAT seed:D i got it in 10 min:D and ofc il sedd when im dun gg=)
I registered just to thank you. This sounds 1000x better than the original, thank you! I don't understand all the technical talk about stems and such but it sounds you could make this even better and I would be even more happy!
The Megaupload sample sounds great, I think it's awesome that people can do this, remaster I mean. How you do it, I don't know, but it's a skill I'd love to learn. Kudos on that.
Having expressed my appreciation, I do wanna say that your sample from the retail side, the first 30 seconds, don't really sound like the retail CD. I have the retail version, ripped from my own personal copy, and I have a bassier 320 kbps version from TPB, and both sound different. The one in your sample doesn't sound quite right.. I can't peg it though.
Bottom line, yours sounds great. Amazing job. I enjoy collecting and archiving the different versions, this will be my third. However, I do like the retail sound, the static gives it an edgier, more electric sound, almost rainlike. But a clean version like yours will be nice to rock from time to time.
Awesome work, man. Color me impressed.

Thank you all for your kind words. I'm just glad to see these being put to good use! :)
holy shit. just downloaded your sample. I'm amazed at how clear and defined yours sounds. downloading now. this is my 4th version, first was the shittye sounding leak, then buying the retail cd, then the first of the gh3 masters in flac, and now this.
so i just got done with it. amazing job. There's actually dynamic range on this one (which isn't there on the retail cd). I love that you can also hear the bass in this mix (and not just in the brief mix in Cyanide. Finally a version where there is no distortion in James' voice at the end of 'the day that never comes'. it was always an annoyance, even in the original guitar hero 3 mix.
u the fuckin man
u the fuckin man
DECEiFER, pay close attention here. Get really, really close to your monitor. Ready? Alright. YOU ARE THE FUCKING MAN. Go look yourself in a mirror, and tell yourself that. This sounds great.
DECEiFER, I was blown away when I heard your remaster. I was wondering if you do mixing and/or mastering work? I am working on some material and would love to hear what you could do with it. I'd of course be willing to pay for your work. Is this something you would consider?
I don't do it for a living, no. I'd like to, but I have a lot more to learn about it. Right now I'm in college.
What I'd recommend is you look up someone who does do this for a living, see if he can spruce things up for you within your budget.
Failing that, drop me a PM here (does TPB even have a PM system?), leave another comment (I check back regularly enough). I'll be only too happy to take a look at what you've done, and I'd do it free-of-charge. Think of it as a 100% off coupon for your first set of tracks. But, until after December 19th, I'm crazy swamped with assignments for college.
Thank you for your kind words, I'm glad you can enjoy Death Magnetic now!

Bro, the 320 is enough for me, I do not care whether or not it is a reloop
I apreciate the enormous amount of work you upload and share this excellent disc.
Best regards

I also appreciate all these mixes, haven't found one that I REALLY like yet, maybe this is the one.
Great Work Deceifer!!!!! im just wondering if there is anything you can do with "St ANGER" because i think that Lars "snare drum" sounds like he is banging on a trash can lid & it spoils the whole album for me. i wish it sounded more like it sounds on the AND JUSTICE FOR ALL.. album. anyway, it would be great if someone could do something with it. CHEERS
Awesome work dude, I already loved the songs but now they sound perfect. Theres no distortion where there shouldn't be. The only problem i am having is that in the beginning of All Nightmare Long when James says "Luck...Runs...Out" it sounds weird and bad on my file. Does anyone else hear this? It isn't distorted or anything but it sounds almost like their is a tremolo effect on it
Hi Bluesdude. While I appreciate your honestly, you should have read my very detailed description above. There was no free editor used. In-fact, I used Adobe Audition 3.0, as mentioned in the description.
The volume is low, and that is the downfall. Two things. I used a set of very cheap headphones (a headset I use for Skype), instead of the studio monitors that I have since purchased. The second thing is that I didn't want to ruin the dynamics, or else this re-master would have ended up precisely like Metallica's retail release, and without anything accurate at the time to monitor the sound, I had to draw the line.
I intended on making a second release, just like Moderus did with Moderus II. I just never got around to it. Hey, I might still do it yet.
I haven't checked this page in so long, I am surprised that it's even seeded anymore.
As far as I am aware, though, most sound systems have a volume control. My advice: turn it up! :)
Thanks to everyone who has commented. I appreciate your kind words and candidness.

Thanks you so much for uploading this! Sounds so much better than the original. Downloading the FLAC one too.
